TRIOPTICS recognised as a leading innovator

TRIOPTICS GmbH from Wedel, which has won the Top 100 award for the second time, is among the international leaders in the optics sector.

Überlingen – TRIOPTICS GmbH is one of this year’s leading innovators in the German SME sector. The Wedel-based company will be presented with the Top 100 award, now in its 24th year, by Ranga Yogeshwar, Professor Nikolaus Franke and compamedia. Following its success in 2010, this is the second time that TRIOPTICS has joined this elite group. The independent panel of judges praised the company’s healthy climate of innovation and the success of its innovations.

TRIOPTICS GmbH from Wedel, which has won the Top 100 award for the second time, is among the international leaders in the optics sector. The family business was founded in 1991 and develops measuring equipment for lenses in mobile phones and digital cameras, as well as for the camera modules of driver assistance systems. “We specialise in tailor-made solutions for customers from a vast range of different areas, from medical and mobile technology to automotive,” explained Managing Director Dr Stefan Krey. In the last three years, the top innovator, which currently employs 210 people at its head office in Germany, took out two German and five international patents. Recently, half of the company’s revenue has come from market innovations.

One of the drivers behind the success of TRIOPTICS is its healthy climate of innovation. After the top innovator more than tripled the number of its employees from 50 to 165 between 2011 and 2015, while doubling its revenue at the same time, a business model innovation has given a further boost to the company’s growth. “Our six sites outside Germany have become subsidiaries, making them part of the company. The new sense of belonging has increased staff loyalty, especially in Asia, and we are able to rely on a very good local workforce,” explained Steffan Gold, another Managing Director. This is another way for TRIOPTICS to keep a close eye on global trends.

The Top 100 competition

Since 1993, compamedia has been awarding the Top 100 seal of approval to SMEs with a particular ability to innovate and above-average success rates for innovations. Professor Nikolaus Franke has coordinated the project since 2002. He is the founder and director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is one of the world’s leading innovation researchers and has won 18 science awards and published over 200 articles. The Top 100 is mentored by science journalist and television presenter Ranga Yogeshwar and organised in partnership with the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research and the German Association for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (BVMW).
